As we kicked off this season, many of us were buzzing with anticipation about how fiercely competitive it would be. So, how has it stacked up?

It’s official—this season has delivered on every front! The average margin of victory has tightened dramatically, dropping from 21.4 points last season to just 15.2 points. We’ve already witnessed 5 nail-biting games decided by 7 points or fewer, a significant jump from the 4 we saw last season. And the drama doesn’t stop there—blowouts have all but vanished. Last season, 9 games ended with a 21-point gap or more, but this year, we’ve seen just 4 such games. Plus, teams have surpassed the 40-point mark in 3 fewer games, adding to the season’s competitive edge.

The Buzz Around the New Blocking Mechanic

Has the newly introduced blocking mechanic given the offense the boost we were hoping for? While we don’t have the exact toss yardage from last season, this year’s numbers are certainly impressive. We’ve already seen 66 toss attempts racking up 275 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per toss. This suggests a possible uptick in effectiveness, especially with some electrifying touchdown runs enabled by this new blocking strategy. On top of that, the handoff game is making a spectacular comeback—rushing touchdowns by wide receivers and running backs have doubled this season to 10, compared to just 5 last year. This resurgence hints at a thrilling evolution in how teams are approaching their offensive plays.

The Evolution of Quarterback Play

Quarterbacks are shining brighter than ever with their strategic prowess. They’ve been smarter with the play clock, cut down on interceptions, taken fewer sacks, and—hold the phone—there haven’t been any punts yet! This season has been marked by a surprising reduction in turnovers and a more disciplined approach from our signal-callers, making the games even more riveting.

Spotlight on the Receivers

This season, receivers are putting on a show! In just the first 5 games, they’ve made 123 more catches, scored 12 additional touchdowns, and racked up 1,154 more receiving yards compared to last year. They’ve also improved their reliability, dropping 7 fewer passes. Though the yards per pass have slightly dipped, it’s more about adjustments in quarterback play than a dip in receiver skills. Plus, we’ve already seen three receivers exceed 1,000 yards from scrimmage this season—up from just one last year.
